Aneurysm

What does an Aneurysm mean?

An aneurysm is a disorder where the inner wall of an artery is swelling or cracking. Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood rich in nutrients from the heart to the rest of the body. When a region on an artery’s inner wall weakens, it swells out and can break or rupture due to the blood flow pressure. An aneurysm collapse causes abundant internal trauma, strokes, and even death.

Risk factors

If you smoke, drink, or take drugs, have high BP, or are obese, you are at risk of an aneurysm. If you have a physical wound that has damaged your blood flow or if aneurysms are present in your family, you are also at risk for aneurysms.

When you should be tested for Aneurysms?

You should be screened for aneurysms if you have symptoms such as severe migraine, blurred vision, pain and swelling, dizziness, vomiting, elevated heart rate, tight neck, etc.

Will an Aneurysm need surgery?

When you need surgical care for an aneurysm, the Aneurysms consultant will call you. Endovascular stent surgery is necessary for abdominal aneurysms, whereas unruptured brain aneurysms do not require surgery. They will only require occasional supervision.

How long does it take to recover?

Surgical treatment of an aneurysm takes up to 12 weeks to fully heal.
